The Hall Art Foundation - Reading, Vermont

Southern Vermont's Lexington Farm, built by Elisha W. Watkins in the early 1800’s and operated as a dairy farm until the 1980's, is now home to The Hall Art Foundation, having been sensitively converted into a gallery space that will showcase masterworks from a private collection. The Foundation's inaugural installation will feature solo presentations of work by Georg Baselitz, A. R. Penck, Neil Jenney and Edward Burtynsky.

Georg Baselitz is one of Germany’s most celebrated living artists, with a career spanning more than fifty years. He is possibly best known for his paintings of inverted figures, animals, landscapes and still-lives that emerged in 1969. Engaging these classic figurative motifs, Baselitz creates and/or displays work upside down in order to re-focus the viewer on the abstract qualities of his compositions rather than their representational ones.

A. R. Penck, born  in Dresden in 1939, is a prominent and influential German artist. Since the beginning of his career, Penck has pursued an intense interest in the relationship between individuals and society, and the political and social structures that govern them. While living in East Berlin he formulated the basis of his mature style in an environment where any art created outside the socialist realist mold could be called subversive and developed a painting style where abstract imagery could render political and existential realities legible.  

Born in 1945, American painter Neil Jenney has been a defiantly unique voice in contemporary painting for over forty years. He came to prominence in the mid-1970s with the emergence of what curator Marcia Tucker described as “Bad Painting”. Created between 1968 and 1970, Jenney’s "Bad Paintings" were developed in reaction to the minimalist, conceptual, and hyperrealist styles prominent at the time and presented a new and unique style of realism based on ideas rather than mimetic accuracy.

Edward Burtynsky, one of Canada's most respected photographers, achieved international recognition for his large-format color photographs of global industrial landscapes. Burtynsky's most famous photographs are sweeping landscape views where modern industrial activity has reshaped the surface of the land. Recently the subject of a show at the Hood Museum of Art, Burtynsky's images of the quarries of Vermont were explored within the context of the geological and social history of this area.

A New Season at Northern Stage

Northern Stage kicks off its 16th season next week, under new Executive Director Russell Maitland, with an exciting lineup of shows.

First up is Garson Kanin's Born Yesterday, a terrific election-year comedy telling the story of a not-so-honest businessman and a not-so-dumb blonde who take Washington, D.C. by storm. But when the businessman hires a journalist to teach her some manners, her 'education' takes an unexpected turn.

Included in the seven shows this season are spine-tingling mystery, Anthony Shaffer's Sleuth, side-splitting comedy, Alistair Foot and Anthony Marriott's No Sex Please, We're British, and thought-provoking drama, David Mamet's Race.

What are you doing next Tuesday?

Well, if I didn't have to be up before 5:00am on Wednesday morning to get my kids to crew practice on the river, I would be driving up to Stowe for some Grammy-winning, Texican rock’n’roll courtesy of Los Lonely Boys who are doing a show at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center, October 2nd at 8:00pm.

Lebanon Opera House has some great shows in the fall line-up, and there is something for everyone regardless of your taste in music.

Rock, blues, jazz, Motown, even a barbershop quartet. You name it, they've got it.

Higgy is coming with me to see indie-pop singer-songwriter sensation Ingrid Michaelson on October 27th because I agreed to accompany him to Grateful Dead honor band (I made up that term because 'tribute band' doesn't quite do them justice) Dark Star Orchestra on December 3rd. I haven't told him yet so let's keep it to ourselves for now.

Dartmouth Film Society Fall Series: 'The Return'

As The Hopkins Center celebrates 50 years of hosting the arts in Hanover this fall, the Dartmouth Film Society has assembled 20 films, vintage and contmeporary, with the common theme of past and present interweaving.

Rififi, blacklisted American director Jules Dassin's film noir masterpiece, is the story of four ex-cons who reunite for a last hurrah in Paris and features "one of the best heist sequences ever filmed." Korean movie director Hong Sang-soo's The Day He Arrives tells the comic story of a movie director who returns to a small town to visit an old friend, and over the course of three days, finds himself returning to the same bar, the same woman, and the same situations. Jonathan Demme's acclaimed documentary, Neil Young Journeys, follows the music legend to his childhood home to prepare for a concert at Toronto’s Massey Hall. This close-up view of the artist "is rich, rewarding and possibly one of the greatest concert films of all time."

The series kicks off Friday, September 21st. Personally, we are looking forward to revisiting Groundhog Day - yes, more Bill Murray!

Good Eats at the Boyden Valley Harvest Festival

 

Mark your Calendars!

The annual Boyden Valley Harvest Festival is being held Saturday and Sunday, September 22nd & 23rd.

Founded by David & Linda Boyden, Boyden Valley Winery was the first licensed winery in Vermont, and was awarded a Daysie for best winery in Vermont in the 2012 Seven Days reader’s choice awards.

Food and wine tastings will be available all day; local Vermont food vendors participating this year include Marsh Hollow jams, Boston Post Dairy, Smugglers' Notch Distillery, Shelburne's O Bread Bakery, and the Northeast Kingdom's Per's Smoked - as in fish.

In adition, there will be hayrides, Meet & Greet with the wine makers, opportunity to taste some wine grapes, Grape Stomping, and more!

The proceeds from the specialty food and wine pairing (featuring products from participating vendors) will be donated to Camp Takumta .
